THE HOLY SPIRIT IS ALL-KNOWING
“But, as it is written, ‘What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love him’—these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God. For who knows a person’s thoughts except the spirit of that person, which is in him? So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God.” —1 Corinthians 2:9–12
DEVOTION
Throughout the Bible, we find the Holy Spirit revealing what could not be known through human wisdom alone.
In Acts 10, the Spirit told Peter that three men were at his door looking for him. In Ezekiel 8, the Spirit gave the prophet a detailed vision of Jerusalem, revealing both the glory of God and the secret sins of Israel’s leaders.
In the Christmas story, the Holy Spirit revealed to Simeon that he would not die before seeing the promised Messiah (Luke 2:26). In Acts 11, the prophet Agabus foretold by the Spirit that a severe famine was coming. The Spirit also prepared Paul for the suffering awaiting him (Acts 20:22–23) and warned that some would later abandon the faith for deceptive teachings (1 Timothy 4:1).
What do these moments teach us? The Holy Spirit is all-knowing.
In today’s passage, Paul explains that the Spirit searches everything—even the depths of God. This does not mean that the Spirit needs to search in order to learn something new. Rather, He fully knows and comprehends the mind of God because He is the Spirit of God. He knows what no human eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind could discover on its own—and He graciously reveals God’s truth to us.
The Holy Spirit is always present, all-powerful, and all-knowing.
This truth should both convict and encourage us. It convicts us because the Spirit knows the deepest thoughts, desires, and secrets of our hearts. Nothing is hidden from Him. But it also encourages us because although He knows us completely, He still loves us deeply. He remains committed to transforming us, teaching us, and leading us with kindness and grace (Galatians 5:22). Jesus knew the Holy Spirit was the Helper we desperately needed (John 16:7).
Ananias and Sapphira learned this truth in a sobering way in Acts 5. They attempted to deceive the apostles about their financial gift, but their dishonesty was exposed by the Holy Spirit. Peter told Ananias, “You have not lied to man but to God” (Acts 5:4). Their story reminds us that we cannot hide anything from God—and we do not need to try.
As you approach today, trust the God who knows everything. Acknowledge His Spirit, walk honestly before Him, and welcome His help. The Holy Spirit already knows who you are, where you have been, and exactly what you need.
PRAYER
Holy Spirit, You know all things. You know the mind of God, the future before me, and the deepest places within my heart. Forgive me for the ways I have tried to hide from You or rely only on my own understanding– especially when I get confused. Search me, reveal anything in me that does not honor You, and lead me in truth. Thank You for knowing me completely and still loving me faithfully. Help me trust Your wisdom and welcome Your guidance today. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Ask the Holy Spirit to search your heart and reveal one area where you need to walk in greater honesty, surrender, or trust. Write down what He brings to mind, confess what needs to be confessed, let go what needs surrender, and respond in obedience.
